Basement-Renovation-Morris Plains, NJ                             March 2014

Last winter, after our basement flooded for the second time, we decided to do a small renovation which included knocking down an interior wall to expand the space. We hired Joe after a recommendation from a family member who recently had hired him for their kitchen.

The project ended up spinning into other areas when mold was discovered behind the walls.  From start to finish Joe was involved in the remediation and was always available for questions.  He completed additional research for us so we could make the best informed decisions as well.

Following the mold remediation he was able to complete our basement renovation.  Throughout the project, Joe offered advice and suggestions regarding layout and materials which was very helpful.

I can truly say he is the most thorough and detail oriented contractor we have worked with!  He takes great pride in his work and takes extra time to make sure it looks perfect.  I would recommend Joe for home renovations and would not hesitate to use him again as a contractor.

Kitchen-Renovation-Morristown, NJ                                       May 2013

Recently my husband and I decided to remodel our kitchen.  We were on a budget and did not want to purchase new kitchen cabinets, so we were in search of a contractor who would be willing to take on a complicated project.  From the beginning Joe had a professional approach to the job.  He creatively offered us several different options and allowed us to make the changes we were looking for without over-extending our budget.

He completely transformed our 70’s style kitchen into a modern looking workspace.  He built a new shelf for our microwave and reused our cabinets to create an island with seating.  He also updated the look of our refrigerator by enclosing it with panels, making it appear as though we had new cabinets.

He is trustworthy, diligent and precise.  I never felt that he took on the job just to finish it – he takes pride in his work and wants to do the job the right way (even if it means a little extra time and effort).  I would recommend Joe Shadel without reservation and will definitely use him for future house projects.

RE: Joe Shadel General Contractor

To Whom it May Concern:

We have used the Professional Services of Joe Shadel on several occasions.  Back in 1990 after we moved into our home in Landing NJ, the Township put sewer lines in and we needed a Contractor to hook up our home to the new sewer line.  We received so many recommendations from friends in the neighborhood to use Joe Shadel to do the sewer hookup.  We did, his price was right in line with the other estimates, so we hired him.  Joe arrived on time, exactly when he said he would and did a Fantastic Job!  When the job was finished you knew he was there and a job was done, and . . . the cleanup and re-seeding was Terrific!  Within a few weeks when the grass grew back you could not tell anybody was there . . . it looked great!!  That started our long time professional relationship.  Since then Joe has built a cedar deck on the side of our home, material and workmanship again was superior. I even saw a deck railing on another deck in the neighborhood that I wanted.  We took Joe over to see the railing and he duplicated it to a “T” on our deck.  When he was done . . . again . . . the job, the cleanup and everything was done in a timely manner and was done when he promised.  I’ve had other contractors and neighbors stop and ask me who did the job.  I know several of my friends used Joe after he built our deck and they were very happy.  We even had Joe replace the 2 front bay windows in our home and again another excellent job.  Since 1990 we have had Joe do several small jobs in our home from plumbing to electrical to carpentry and he does all with Pride and Professionalism.  I have also seen some of the larger projects Joe has done from room additions, complete remodels and even a Multi- Million Dollar home down the shore . . . all done with Pride and Care.  Joe definitely takes pride in his work and if he doesn’t like the way something comes out he will make it right!  Joe is a TRUE PROFESSIONAL and I would not hesitate to have him do anything for me.  Unfortunately I haven’t persuaded him into making a road trip to Arizona to do a little work for me, but I am still working on that.  I still have Joe on call for me if I need him to take care of my NJ property.  What can I say besides if you use him you will be happy and satisfied.

Sincerely,
John Roncinske

Over the past year Joe has completed numerous jobs in my house from carpentry, windows, doors, slate repair and releveling of my front walk, replacement of attic fans, fence repairs, you name it, he's done it, no job is too big or too small.  I'm a civil engineer by trade so I expect the highest quality of work in my home, no short cuts, all jobs done to code, and Joe has never let me down.  He maintains extremely high standards, his work in all disciplines is top notch.  He purchases quality materials and does a quality job on schedule and within budget.  His prices are reasonable and his standards are high.  What more can you ask for in a contractor?  This is one extremely satisfied customer who will be hiring him again for additional work!

Letter of Recommendation;

I would recommend Joe Shadel as a painter/contractor.  He worked diligently getting my home in perfect shape for my daughter’s wedding.  He was recommended by my brother and I am so glad we hired him to paint our living and dining room.  He also installed closet doors in our foyer.  He was reliable and very, very neat.  I would never consider hiring anyone but Joe Shadel for future home improvement needs.

Please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely,
Susan Calantone

This is from someone who did not hire us but wished she had - Beacon, NY (Hudson Valley)

February 15, 2013

I first met Joe Shadel when I was looking to re-do my kitchen in the old 1890 Victorian home I recently had purchased for myself and my daughter. Joe and I discussed the project briefly and at the same time, other contractors were also bidding on the kitchen project with various ideas.  I naively knew absolutely nothing about the scope of my project nor what to even remotely expect.  Ultimately, I ended up choosing another contractor that came up with an idea to re-locate my kitchen to another room while also giving me the lowest price to do the work.  Well, that choice ended up being an absolute nightmare because what I quickly learned is that the contractor I hired was completely over his head and that his promises were beyond empty.  Basically, he was a crook who gutted my kitchen while I moved out and needless to say kept asking for $$ and just completely took advantage of me.
I immediately called back Joe Shadel who always was the most knowledgeable, hence impressive of all of the contractors I had ever interviewed. Joe halted the work as structural components of the project were unsafe, along with a host of other electrical and plumbing issues-not to mention it all really being a complete mess.  Joe then went above and beyond, asked to see my contract and line by line critiqued my contract with my deadbeat contractor to the point whereby I recently won a judgement against him in court.  Joe wrote the critique so well that I realized that I obviously had made a terrible decision by not hiring Joe in the first place.  Joe's expertise in construction along with his professionalism and his ability to articulate what needs to be done with realistic estimates is exceptional.  I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Joseph Shadel for any type of construction work.  In addition to his vast experience and knowledge, he's a straight-forward honest and trust-worthy professional in a business rampant with disreputable workers.  I learned the hard way and now know to use Joe Shadel for all of my future renovation needs.

Sincerely,
Maryellen Case

This is from a client we starting doing work for in the 90's.

To Whom It May Concern,

I write this letter in recommendation of Joe Shadel General Contracting.  I’ve had the pleasure of working with Joe on several renovations to my home since the 1990’s.  I can recommend his work highly and without reservation.

Through the course of my dealings with Joe, he was always a consummate professional, his estimates were always accurate, his work was always completed on time and on budget, and he chose and managed sub-contractors well.  In addition, he is extremely clean and tidy at the worksite.  At the end of each workday my worksite/home was never left in disarray.

Joe is not only a good contractor, but his work is performed with extreme care and precision.  He is a gifted artist whose artwork is his craft.
